Unlikely Dance Partners
Have you ever seen a blue jay dance with a squirrel? That’s what I thought I was witnessing one morning this week right outside my bedroom window.
This time of year, I see and hear lots of blue jays flying around my neighborhood. There are always plenty of squirrels scampering about, too. But I had never seen these two species interact before.
As I opened the blinds to let in the light (as I do every morning), I witnessed a blue jay hopping over a squirrel. Did I really just see that? Yep. The squirrel changed directions, and the blue jay hopped over it again. It happened a few more times as I stood there, wondering what in the world was going on!
Was the blue jay antagonizing the squirrel? Or was the squirrel antagonizing the blue jay? It didn’t seem like either animal was agitated. I watched their dance a while longer when, suddenly, the squirrel left the “dance floor” and bolted up a tree.
That’s when the blue jay took a few hops toward where the squirrel had been. Its head disappeared in the tall grass for a moment, then emerged with a small piece of bread in its beak before flying off.
So that’s what the dance was all about! The blue jay wanted that piece of bread, but the squirrel was checking it out first. I hadn’t noticed the piece of bread in the grass—I could only see the peculiar choreography unfolding.
It was a comical reminder that we may not always understand what’s happening at first. But if we’re patient and keep watching, the truth will be revealed.
This has certainly been true in my life. I may not always understand or like what is happening (or not happening), but if I trust and keep going, I can eventually see the blessing in disguise. Of course, that’s only possible when I look with the eyes of love instead of fear.
So that’s the lesson I’m taking from these unlikely dance partners: even when things don’t make sense, I will keep looking through the lens of love, trust, and allow the answers and blessings to be revealed. This feels especially important to remember when so much in our world doesn’t seem to make sense.
If you could use some assistance in having faith and seeing with the eyes of love during these challenging times, it would be my great honor to work with you through a series of Spiritual Coaching sessions or a private Family Constellations session. Both can help you shift from fear to love and move through whatever challenges you may be facing.
For more information or to book a session, please visit my website. I look forward to “dancing” with you.
Until next time, may you observe the many lessons (and dances) of Mother Nature with wonder and curiosity.
Understanding is appreciation, because what you understand you can identify with, and by making it part of you, you have accepted it with love.
