What If It Were Easy?

A Sometimes Irritating But Helpful Question

I am very lucky to have some really good friends who are also my prayer partners. We lift each other up in challenging times and call each other out when we start going too far down the road of negativity. If I start lamenting about how hard a task, project, or conversation is going to be, one of those prayer partners will ask me a question that’s slightly irritating in the moment but always helpful:

What if it were easy?

That question stops me in my tracks because I realize I haven’t allowed myself to have that thought. Through years of studying A Course in Miracles, I have learned how powerful our thoughts are. What and how I’m thinking affects my experience of life. If I decide in advance that something will be difficult, then it most likely will be. But when I am open to the possibility that it might be easy, I am allowing an opportunity for things to move forward with ease and grace. I am also less prone to procrastinate.

Life gave me another chance to learn this lesson early last month when I discovered that some of my clients were not receiving my emails. This email address is the primary method by which I communicate with my clients, so it is extremely frustrating when emails end up in spam folders or not delivered at all!

It started happening in mid-May after the launch of my new website. As I wrote about then, my web designer was instrumental in helping me make the transfer to the new platform. She also recalibrated settings behind the scenes so my email account would continue functioning…which it did.

But soon after the transfer, a few clients reported receiving warning messages that my email account was no longer secure. In addition to missing emails, I was also having a hard time logging into my account. I had to enter my username and password three or four times before it let me in. I knew these glitches must be related to my website transfer, but I had no idea how to fix them.

Thankfully, it occurred to me to contact GoDaddy, the company that holds my domain name, johnharoldmoore.com. They also provide email service attached to that name.

When I logged into GoDaddy and clicked on the email service tab, a message popped up telling me my account setup was incomplete. Below that message was a button that said something like “CLICK HERE TO COMPLETE CONFIGURATION.”

Could the solution be that simple? That’s when I heard my prayer partner’s voice playfully taunting me: What if it were easy? Maybe it could be!

Before I clicked that button, I noticed a message below it saying this process may take 24 to 48 hours. Since I am not an expert on such things, I decided to call customer service to discuss my situation before clicking that button. If I might be locked out of my account for two days, I wanted to plan for this to happen at a convenient time.

I waited on hold less than five minutes before speaking to a very nice woman who told me clicking that button should resolve the issues I described. She could see on her end that my account had not been completely updated to the new settings. She also said it would probably take less than an hour for the software to update everything since I had just one email address.

With her encouragement, I clicked the button and trusted that whatever was happening behind the scenes would resolve the issues. I stepped away from my computer for a couple of hours and came back later to send an email to one of my longtime clients who had not received something I’d sent her. What relief I felt the next morning when I read her reply saying she had received my email.

I wish I had remembered to ask that helpful question long before I started looking into the solution for my email problem. What I feared would be a long, drawn-out process turned out to be one click on my laptop and a 10-minute phone call. It certainly was easy…and a great reminder of what’s possible.

Can you imagine things falling into place easily and quickly, instead of deciding in advance that it will be difficult? I’m not saying that whatever task is before you won’t require some effort on your part, but it might be a lot less challenging than you imagine. This has definitely been my experience. The less I worry or resist, the more I get in the flow and let things happen organically.
